For a number of years my go to road shoe has been the Kinvara. It is a nice, uber-light shoe that has a decent amount of padding for my road miles.
The Kinvara 4 was a good shoe, but not great. Simply because it’s toe box upper wore out really quick. Think 200km quick. Despite this I still managed to log 700+km on mine before I decided upon an upgrade.
So, is the Kinvara 5 an upgrade?
Well, I am glad to say that one of the first upgrades I noticed is to that Upper. They have added some Flexfilm to the problem areas. So I am hoping that this will improve the durability. Another change is the shape of the heel cup, it is lower and made from a different material.
The big change though. Drumroll please… The Pro Lock. This is a band that runs around the middle of the shoe that tightens the shoe onto your mid-foot. Although be warned that if you tighten your laces too much you can actually feel like you are squeezing the life out of your foot. Having said this, I like it. I have always liked to feel like my shoes are solidly on my feet and often feel like I have to over tighten the laces. Now with the Pro Lock, it cinches down nice and cozy.
So how did it all add up?
* Light – Men’s 9 weighs in at 7.7oz
* Fit – amazing cushioning
* Flexibility – simply perfect
* Ride – they have kept true to the Kinvara line
* Style – hate the lime green.But the black is nice
* Tongue – very large for the size of the shoe
